Signing up for the URI Participant Portal allows you to view all research studies that are currently open and apply to studies.
We conduct a broad range of research studies, including surveys, focus groups, in-person hardware and software testing, online one-on-one product testing and evaluation, and a multitude of other marketing and user research study types. We work with a variety of clients who cover a range of industries including travel, medical, software, hardware, and gaming. You probably use the products and services of our major clients every day, and the research we conduct helps these clients stay at the bleeding edge of product innovation.
Most research studies are conducted through your computer using meeting tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Hangouts, although we do have opportunities to attend studies in-person in our state-of-the-art Contactless Lab Pods near Seattle and other locations. So, even though you may be in Beijing, London, Sydney, or anywhere else in the world, we likely have research studies that you can participate in.
We need you! We conduct research across all types of products, tools, and services. In addition to a very large range of general consumer research studies, we also conduct research with people in a wide range of office (business application users), data (such as Data Analysts), and technical roles (such as software developers).
Most studies pay cash commensurate with the type of study, the requirements of the study, and the length of the study.
We offer multiple payment methods, including PayPal and Tremelo depending on your location.
We want to offer you a great experience participating in interesting research studies, having an opportunity to influence the direction of products and services that you use every day, and getting paid too!
In return, we ask that you observe the following behaviors:
1. Be honest about your skills and experience – exaggerating or lying about either can put you and/or the researcher in an uncomfortable situation and waste both your time and theirs. If researchers feel that you have misrepresented yourself significantly, you may be disqualified from the study and forfeit your gratuity.
2. Be respectful:
If the researcher feels you have been disrespectful, you may be disqualified from the study and forfeit your gratuity. You may also not be invited for future studies, or you could (in serious or persistent cases) be banned from participating in any studies.
We will send you emails when we think we have a study that fits your profile particularly well, but the primary method of making you aware of studies is through the Participant Portal, where you can configure your notifications and also contact preferences. If you are selected for a research study, we will contact you and coordinate via email and sometimes phone.
Please view our privacy policy here. We only use your information directly in connection with contacting you about research studies that you have indicated you may be interested in. You can change your preferences or remove your account at any time. We do not share your information unless you provide explicit consent. Typically, this is only as needed if you choose to participate in a research study directly with one of our clients.
No problem! Just return to the sign-in page and select the ‘Forgot password’ link, and you will be sent an email with instructions to reset your password.
Unfortunately (due to privacy issues) we currently cannot recover account information associated with a previous email account. We suggest you register under a new account. The account associated with your previous email will expire in six months and all personal data associated with that account will be deleted.
There are a few important reasons why we need to verify that you are who you say you are:
1. You may get to see products no one else has seen yet! Research studies often include new products, methods, or information that is not public, and a Non-Disclosure Agreement is required to participate, stating that you will not disclose what you have seen in the research study. We need to verify your identity to ensure that you are accepting this agreement.
2. Scammers! We get them – everyone gets them. Scammers are people who try to create multiple accounts to increase their chance of participating, or who try to participate in the same study more than once (sometimes they disguise their voice!) – we’ve seen it all, but the effect is that it makes it harder for the honest person like you to get into studies and provide genuine feedback, and it wastes a lot of our time and the time of our clients. The good thing is, verifying your identity means the scammers don’t take your place in studies and don’t prevent genuine people like you from getting a fair chance to participate.
You will be notified about your suitability for research studies in two ways:
1. You may be emailed directly at the email address in your profile whenever you are a potential fit for a research study (even if you have not applied for a study).
2. If you complete a study screener and get through to the end, a Project Coordinator will email you directly and confirm whether you have been chosen for that study.
You will be notified if you are NOT chosen for a study in two primary ways:
1. The study screener will let you know that you are not suitable for a study based on your screener answers.
2. The final selection for the study will be determined by the researcher conducting the study’s review of your answers. If you are not notified of termination then you are eligible and placed on a hold where you will remain for the life of the study. When/If you are selected you will be contacted to confirm a session time and date.
Each study has a set of particular requirements set out by our clients. These specific requirements are necessary to ensure people who are chosen to participate in the study are suitably experienced and/or qualified for the study research goals. Our goal is to reduce the number of questions that you need to answer to qualify for studies. As we work to add new features to the Participant Portal, we will be saving more of your responses to your profile and better target studies to you based on your profile.
Study incentives are determined across a number of factors, but the main factors are:
1. Length of the research session. Longer study sessions often pay larger incentives.
2. Difficulty of the profile. Studies that require people who work in specific fields, have specific skills, or have specific experiences that are not shared by the general population, tend to pay higher incentives.
Yes! You can apply for as many studies as you think you may qualify for; however you can only apply to an individual study once.
Some research studies have very specific requirements, and most people will not qualify (even if you thought you would be a great fit); other studies are open to just about anyone. Please don’t take it personally, and please don’t give up if you are not successful at first!
It can take time to get selected for a study, but here are a few tips to help get yourself selected:
1. Be honest – remember that if your responses in the screener surveys seem implausible or inconsistent, you will likely be flagged for future studies.
2. Keep your profile up to date.
3. If you have a LinkedIn account, adding this to your profile can help us validate your skills and experience, and suitability for a study.
4. Once you are selected, be respectful, polite, thoughtful, and engaged during your study.
5. Verify your identity – verifying your identity is a primary method for us to ensure you are you, and not someone pretending to be someone else!
You will be asked to present photo ID upon arrival, other than that you don’t have to prepare anything beforehand. Just come on time and prepared to give feedback!
Most study sessions take less than 2 hours.Your confirmation email will contain the duration for your session.
Most of our in-person sessions take place at our office in Redmond, WA. (map) We also conduct sessions remotely and occasionally on-site at our client’s location. Directions will be provided to you by one of our UX Project Coordinators.
Some studies are on-site at our labs in Redmond, WA. (map)
You will receive your gratuity within 5-7 business days after completion of your study session. You will be emailed a gratuity redemption link and will be able to choose from multiple payment options.
If you are not able to make it to your scheduled study appointment, we ask that you let your UX Project Lead know as soon as possible (this would be the person who scheduled you for your study). You can either call or email to inform them you are no longer able to make it to your session or if you need to reschedule. We ask that you give as much notice as possible so that we have adequate time to find a replacement.
All URI study sessions have a strict start time that must be adhered to. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early for in-person studies and not later than 5 minutes early for online sessions just in case there is any software updates or connection issues. If you believe you are not going to make the scheduled start time, please contact your UX Project Lead to let us know prior to the session start time. Arriving late can affect your gratuity and your eligibility for future studies.
We ask that you participate on your own for your study to avoid any distractions or disturbances during the session. Please schedule childcare accordingly if needed.
Yes, our study sessions are recorded for internal use only. Your image will not be used publicly in any matter. For additional detail please see our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Please ensure you have checked the payment information in your confirmation email – payments can take up to 10 business days to process after your study is completed. If you are outside of this time window and you have not received payment, please email the Project Coordinator for your study directly.
If you are located in the USA, the IRS requires that we report study payments totaling $600 or more. If you receive payments of $600 or more in a calendar year, URI will send you a 1099 form. If you are outside of the USA, please consult your local tax authority for information about tax liability on gratuity payments.
